Net Zero Housing

Low-Cost Net Zero Energy Renovation of a dilapidated property in Pittsburgh using REM/Rate software

This project utilizes REM/Rate software, a widely used home energy audit and rating program, to evaluate the impact of applying the most current building technologies and materials to an early 20th-century duplex residence in Pittsburgh, PA. Starting with a baseline simulation, a single unit of the duplex residence is modeled to meet IECC 2009 residential requirements. Then the unit is systematically enhanced, leveraging the most energy efficient building practices and materials to exceed IECC 2015 Residential and Energy Star version 3 (Revision 8) requirements. Results demonstrate a relatively affordable method of achieving net zero energy status through a combination of conservation retrofits and renewable energy.
